A very common side effect from Chemo is Mucositis. Mucositis is the painful inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes lining in the digestive tract. It is also know as "mouth sores" in the chemo world. Mouth sores does not do it justice and should not be referred to as "mouth sores." The size and pain associated with mucositis is so much worse than "mouth sores."
I started getting Mucositis from my first chemo treatment. The sores during the 1st half of treatment were tolerable but the 2nd part of the treatment the sores were much worse. They were to the point I didn't want to eat because of the pain, even drinking water hurt.
The western medicine doctors will recommend swishing with baking soda and water, applying lidocaine to them (lidocaine is a prescription that numbs it for about, 3 seconds, and then the pain is back) and swishing with magic mouthwash. Magic mouthwash is a prescription and one of the many ingredients is parabens.
The 1st time I met with Dr Noe (my Naturopathic Oncologist) I had a bad mouth sore. It was huge, and so painful. Nothing I did according to the western medicine world would help, although I admit I bought the magic mouthwash but did not try it after reading the ingredients. Part of Dr. Noe's treatment plan to help heal me from the side effects of chemo is to swish and swallow 2 tsp of glutamine mixed with a little bit of water 3x/day. It's important to swallow because if you have mucositis in the mouth, you have it down your whole GI Tract too. The pain from the sore was gone in 2 days and the sore was gone entirely in 1 week. I still continue to do this daily and I have not had a sore since, not 1.
There should be a flyer at every Oncologist Doctor office to hand out to their patients. Hopefully my Doctor and Nurse will be informing all their patients about Glutamine after seeing how it helped me.
Glutamine is not typically promoted in western medicine because it has not been approved by the FDA. I hope many of you reading this found this as irritating as we did. Just because there hasn't been a trial done to "prove" it works, they can't promote something that would help every cancer patient. I did read they are currently doing a trial so hopefully this information will be more readily available for cancer patients soon.
There is so much out there naturally that can help us tolerate chemo better but if the pharmaceutical industry isn't making money or could make more money off something else that doesn't work as effectively, they choose the one that is more beneficial to them, not to the patient. Hopefully some day western medicine and alternative medicine can stop fighting and start working together to better patients lives. It should be about helping us, not the pharmaceutical industry.
Glutamine also helps with the following side effects of chemo: diarreah, stomatitis, and peripheral neuropathy. It's a no brainer for us to take this natural supplement, seriously.
I ask you to please promote glutamine to anyone you know having to endure chemo. This is the Glutamine I take.
